It’s about the reputation of the college and not whether it was online or classroom.
Let’s say you have two candidates and everything comes down to the degree. One is an online degree and the other is classroom.
Let’s say the online degree is from Harvard, UMass Amherst, Columbia, Stanford, Florida, or some school of that class (yes, they all teach online)
Let’s say the classroom degree is from Eastern Somewhere State U. or Who U. (generic name for any of the 3000+ colleges most people have never heard of).
Which do you pick? Most employers are going with the better reputed school if all other things are equal.
Note: some employers are starting to find that the online grads actually read a textbook or two while they were in college and aren’t accustomed to a slacker’s party life.
Now, let’s say Tom goes to Eastern Yourstate on campus and does the “college experience” thing, gets himself a decent GPA in the high 2’s, and graduates in the normal 4-5 years. He used financial aid and scholarships and mom & dad to pay the way but never had a “real job” in college because he needed to immerse in “the college experience”.
Let’s say too that Jane goes to Eastern Yourstate but does it online because she has a full-time job down at the newspaper as an editorial assistant. Since she’s online she didn’t take advantage of spring break or summer vacation and she finished her degree in 3 years with a pretty solid GPA too. She missed out on “the college experience” because she had to work for a living and pay bills (while acquiring her adult lifestyle). She’s in a little debt from loans but she paid two-years less tuition for the same degree Tom got.
So, Tom has a BA, no work experience, but has “the college experience” background.
Jane has a BA too, applicable work experience, and skipped right into “the adult experience”.
Which one do you think gets the job?
a nursing degree for instance
I heard that working online would get my degree faster. Any other pros/cons?
It depends on what you’re majoring in.
If you can afford it you should go to a regular college.
